How to Build a Strong Brand for Your Trades Business

Jon: I bought myself a new car because how I present myself is very important.

People make snap judgements about you based on how you present.

If I drive up to someone’s business in a s#!tty old car, they’re not going to think I’m a good business coach, are they?

Anyway, how you present is important, even if the above isn’t the best example cause I don’t drive to my client’s business offices…

For a trade business or a building business, how you present tells your customer a lot about what to expect from you and your business in terms of the quality of the job you’re going to do, the level of care you’re going to take and how you and your team are going to conduct yourself when you’re on their site or in their business or their home.

It tells them a lot about how good you are and it tells them a lot about how much you’re going to cost.

And in a good way.

If your business presents poorly – dirty, unkempt people and vehicles and job sites – people will assume your work is like that and they will expect your price point to reflect that.

If your business presents well — well-dressed and tidy people, newish with good vehicle signage, clean job sites, nice looking signage and website and socials and the office, etc., people naturally imagine that the job you’ll do is going to be good and that your price will be somewhat higher.

People (and I mean consumers and people making decisions in business) think like that.

We know that good things cost more than less good things and we use cues like how you present to help us estimate a business’s “goodness”

Now there’s a market for cheap trade business and there’s a market for more expensive and better ones.

Some people will pay for a cheap job and other people will pay more for a better one.

I’m not going to go deep into that, it’s an entire discussion of its own.

What I want you to think about is – for your business – how congruent is your:

  • Pricing;
  • The quality of work you do, the service you provide and the level of risk you protect your customers from;
  • And how your business presents.

If you present cheap but do a good job, it’s going to be hard to charge what you’re worth.

Likewise, if you present great and charge lots and do a s#!tty job, you’ll probably get found out soon.

So, does your presentation match your quality and price?

I’ve made a questionnaire to help you assess yourself on all the ways your business can present.

Say PRESENT and we’ll get it to you.
